Effective communication between sensors, data processing units, and driver interface systems requires careful network design and the implementation of appropriate networking protocols. IV Lab researchers have deployed a wide range of wired and wireless network technologies for data collection and real time control.

Vehicle-vehicle and vehicle-infrastructure communication

Communication between nearby vehicles and between vehicles and the surrounding infrastructure is a rapidly expanding area of ITS research, fueled by the approval of the Digital Short Range Communications (DSRC) standard.

As a participant in the USDOT’s Cooperative Infrastructure Collision Avoidance Systems research initiative, the IV Lab is already working on integrating vehicle-infrastructure communication into the prototype Rural Intersection Collision Avoidance system. Vehicle-to-infrastructure communication promises to make this system more responsive to the differing needs of different vehicle types; infrastructure-to-vehicle communication offers the potential to display dynamic safety information directly in the vehicle, rather than on external signage.
